The cost of attention

A whitepaper holding that attention, not capital or ideas, is the binding constraint on which ventures reach reality. The argument and its figure are open; the underlying measurements remain sealed.

Abstract

Ideas are abundant and capital is liquid, yet most ventures never reach reality. We argue the limiting reagent is attention: the finite capacity to hold one undefined problem still long enough to separate signal from distraction. Where attention is spent before separation, ventures fail in ways no later funding repairs.

Table 1

Cohort condition Ventures observed Reached separation Reached reality
Attention before capital 41 34 19
Capital before separation 58 12 4
Idea-led, attention diffuse 63 00 00
Control — condition 00 00 00

Field note

2025·09·14 — revisited the cohort split. The attention-first group keeps separating cleanly even when under-capitalized. Suspect this is a sampling artifact — it is not; it holds across . Working claim: capital spent before separation buys motion, not direction. Carry to for the formal write-up.
