The intellectual foundation of the institution. Before structure, there is potential. This is how we understand that state, and why we choose to work within it.

What is Tohu

Potential, not chaos.

The name comes from tohu va-vohu – the pre-creation state. It is often read as chaos. That reading is shallow. In the biblical sense, tohu va-vohu is the undefined state of pure potential: unformed, potential-rich, awaiting structure.

The story is emergence, not disorder. Nothing is yet defined, and so everything remains possible. The signals are present; the structure is not. "Let there be light" is what comes next – the first act of recognition, the first separation of one thing from another.

We work in that moment. Most of the world avoids it, preferring the comfort of a named category and a settled market. We treat the undefined state as the place where value is actually created – and we return to it deliberately, again and again.

The Creation Model

Creation is not a single act. It is a passage with stages, from the undefined state through to the living systems that must keep evolving. Six stages describe that passage. The one most overlook – separation – decides almost everything.

Origins

תֹּהוּ וָבֹהוּ

Tohu va-vohu names the state before form: the world as pure potential, unshaped and waiting. What follows is not the imposition of order from above but a sequence of separations – light from dark, the waters from the waters, day from night. Creation proceeds by drawing distinctions.

We take that as our method. The decisive work of any venture is separation: telling signal from distraction, need from desire, opportunity from illusion. To create is first to distinguish – to recognize what is truly there, and to set it apart from everything that only resembles it.

This is the institution's inheritance. Not a metaphor for branding, but a discipline. We begin in the undefined state on purpose, and we earn structure one separation at a time.

Principles

How we work.

  1. Begin before form.

    We start in the undefined state, where the real problems still hide. Comfort with ambiguity is the entry fee.

  2. Own the whole arc.

    Potential to insight to structure to creation to stewardship. We do not hand the hard part to someone else.

  3. Separation is the work.

    The decisive stage is telling signal from distraction. We are ruthless about what deserves creation.

  4. Protect what we prove.

    If it is real, we patent it. Defensibility is not optional.

  5. Selective by design.

    Few ventures, deep attention. Most who knock do not come through. That is the point.

  6. Steward, don't ship-and-leave.

    What we create, we keep evolving. Living systems require care.
